Cheap SEO: what you actually get, and what to avoid

Affordable SEO can work brilliantly for a small business. Cheap SEO done badly can cost you more than it saves. Here's how to tell the difference.

The short answer

Cheap SEO is fine as long as the work is real. A small local business does not need a £2,000-a-month agency retainer. It needs the basics done properly and consistently: a Google Business Profile that is fully optimised, a fast website Google can read, steady reviews, accurate listings and useful content aimed at the searches its customers actually make.

Where cheap SEO goes wrong is when the low price is paid for with shortcuts. Packages at £50 to £100 a month usually mean automated reports, bought links or nothing happening at all. Those can harm your rankings rather than help them.

So the real question is not "how cheap can I get SEO?" but "what is the lowest price at which the right work still gets done?" For most local businesses in the UK, that sits somewhere around £250 to £500 a month.

What cheap SEO usually looks like

Most budget SEO falls into one of three types. It helps to know which one you are being sold.

1. The "set and forget" package

You pay a monthly fee, receive an automated report full of charts, and nothing on your website or Google profile changes. These packages rely on the fact that most business owners never check what was actually done.

2. The link-buying package

"500 backlinks for £49." These links come from spammy directories, foreign blog networks and sites that exist only to sell links. Google is very good at spotting them. At best they are ignored. At worst they trigger a penalty that can take months to recover from.

3. The genuinely affordable package

A smaller specialist or freelancer who keeps costs low by focusing on one area, using a set process and not paying for big offices or account managers. This is the kind of cheap SEO worth paying for.

Cheap SEO red flags

Walk away if you see any of these:

  • Guaranteed number one rankings. Nobody controls Google. A guarantee means they either don't understand SEO or don't mind misleading you.
  • Thousands of backlinks for a fixed small fee. Real links are earned or built one at a time. Bulk links are almost always low quality.
  • No access to your own accounts. You should own your website, Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics. Never let a supplier hold them hostage.
  • Vague monthly reports. If the report doesn't say what was done this month in plain English, assume nothing was.
  • Long tie-in contracts. Twelve-month contracts protect the supplier, not you. Good SEO keeps clients because it works.
  • Keyword stuffing. Pages crammed with "plumber Milton Keynes plumber MK cheap plumber" read badly and no longer rank.

What affordable SEO should include

A low price is fine if you get the work that actually moves local rankings. For a local business, that means:

  • Google Business Profile management. Correct categories, services, photos, regular posts and replies to reviews. For local searches, this is often where the quickest wins are.
  • On-page SEO. Proper page titles, headings and descriptions, a page for each main service, and clear location signals.
  • Technical basics. A fast, mobile-friendly site with no broken links, a sitemap and correct indexing in Search Console.
  • Reviews. A simple, ongoing way to ask happy customers for Google reviews.
  • Citations. Your name, address and phone number listed consistently on the main UK directories.
  • Content. Useful pages and guides that answer what your customers search for.
  • Honest reporting. What was done, what moved and what's next.

Cheap SEO vs good-value SEO

How to keep SEO costs down without cutting corners

  • Target one area first. Ranking in Milton Keynes is cheaper than ranking across the whole of the UK. Expand once it is working.
  • Start with Google Maps. For "near me" searches, the map results often bring more calls than the normal listings.
  • Do the reviews yourself. Asking every happy customer for a review costs nothing and is one of the biggest local ranking factors.
  • Choose a bundled package. Paying separate suppliers for SEO, social media and website upkeep adds up fast.
  • Avoid big setup fees. Good-value SEO should not need a large upfront payment.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Yes, if it brings in customers. If your average job is worth £300 and SEO brings in just two extra jobs a month, a £350 package has more than paid for itself. The maths only works if the work is real, which is why the red flags above matter more than the price tag.

Give any SEO three to six months before you judge it. Google Business Profile changes can show results within weeks. Website rankings build more slowly, but they keep working long after you stop paying for each click, unlike ads.

FAQs

Common questions

What is the cheapest way to do SEO?

Doing the basics yourself: fully completing your Google Business Profile, asking every happy customer for a review, and making sure your website has a clear page for each service. Those cost nothing but time. Once you need help to do it consistently, a small bundled package is usually the cheapest way to get it done properly.

Is £100 a month enough for SEO?

Rarely. At that price there is very little time available for real work, so most £50 to £100 packages rely on automated reports or bulk links. For a local business, around £250 to £500 a month is usually where proper, ongoing work becomes possible.

Can cheap SEO harm my website?

Yes. Bought links, spammy directory submissions and keyword-stuffed content can trigger a Google penalty or simply drag your rankings down. Cleaning that up later often costs more than doing it properly in the first place.

Is affordable SEO good for small businesses?

Yes. Small local businesses don't need enterprise-level SEO. They need the local basics done well every month, which is exactly what a good affordable package should provide.
