The short answer
Most local businesses see the first signs of movement within a few weeks to three months, with meaningful results in three to six months. In competitive trades or busy areas, the strongest results tend to build over six to twelve months and beyond.
That's longer than most people hope, but there's a reason for it. Google needs time to find your changes, trust them and compare you with the businesses already ranking. Once the foundations are in place, though, results tend to build on each other rather than stop.
A typical local SEO timeline
Month 1: Foundations
The first month is about fixing what's holding you back: completing your Google Business Profile, choosing the right categories, fixing technical problems on your website, setting up page titles and content around the right searches, and getting your business details consistent across directories. Not much changes in the rankings yet, but this work decides how fast everything else moves.
Months 2 to 3: Early movement
Google re-crawls your website and starts reflecting the changes. You'll often see more impressions in Google Search Console and your Business Profile performance stats, and you may start ranking for longer, more specific searches such as "emergency electrician in Bletchley". Google Maps visibility usually starts to improve, especially close to your location or service area.
Months 3 to 6: Main keywords
With steady work, such as new content, regular Business Profile posts and a flow of genuine reviews, you start competing for the main searches like "electrician Milton Keynes". This is usually where enquiries start to pick up noticeably.
Months 6 to 12: Compounding
Rankings become more stable and spread over a wider area. Reviews, links and content you've built keep working, so each month adds to the last instead of starting from zero.
What speeds things up
- A complete, active Google Business Profile with the right primary category
- A steady flow of genuine reviews (our guide on how to get Google reviews covers this)
- Consistent business name, phone number and website across the web
- A fast, mobile-friendly website with clear service pages
- An older website with some history and links already
- Lower competition in your trade or area
What slows things down
- A brand-new website or Business Profile. New listings take time to settle. It's normal for a new profile to show up properly for some searches and not others for the first few weeks, and AI tools like Google's AI Mode or ChatGPT can take even longer to pick up new information.
- A competitive trade. Plumbers, solicitors and estate agents in Milton Keynes face more competition than niche specialists.
- Inconsistent listings. Old addresses or phone numbers on directories confuse Google.
- Past problems. Bought links, fake reviews or keyword-stuffed business names can hold a business back or get a profile suspended.
- Stopping and starting. SEO works best as a steady effort.
Why SEO is slower than ads, and why that's fine
Google Ads can put you at the top of the page today, but the moment you stop paying, you disappear. SEO takes longer to build, but the rankings, reviews and content you earn keep bringing in customers without paying for every click. Many businesses use ads for quick leads while SEO builds up. We explain the trade-offs in SEO vs Google Ads.
How to tell it's working
Don't judge local SEO purely on where you rank for one keyword on one day. Rankings shift depending on where the person searching is standing. Look at the bigger picture:
- Business Profile performance: views, calls, website clicks and direction requests
- Google Search Console: impressions and clicks growing over time
- Rankings across the area: how you show in Maps from different parts of Milton Keynes, not just one spot
- Enquiries: the number that really matters. Ask new customers how they found you.
