The quick answer
Google Ads gets you to the top of the page quickly, but you pay for every click and the leads stop when you stop paying. SEO takes longer to build, but once you rank, the visits keep coming without paying for each one. For most local businesses, SEO is the long-term foundation and ads are a useful tool for quick wins or filling gaps while SEO builds.
Side by side
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Results within days | Usually three to six months for solid results |
| Cost model | Pay per click, plus management if you use an agency | Monthly fee or your own time, no cost per click |
| When you stop | Leads stop straight away | Rankings fade slowly, if at all |
| Placement | Sponsored spots at the top and bottom of results | Google Maps pack and organic results |
| Trust | Many people skip ads | Organic and Maps results tend to be trusted more |
| Control | Full control over keywords, budget and timing | Less direct control, as Google decides rankings |
How Google Ads works
You choose the searches you want to appear for, write your ads and set a budget. Google runs an auction each time someone searches, and you pay when someone clicks your ad. The cost per click depends on how many businesses are bidding. In competitive local trades, such as emergency plumbing, locksmiths or solicitors, clicks can cost several pounds or more each, and not every click becomes a customer.
For some trades, Google also offers Local Services Ads, where you pay per lead rather than per click and can earn a Google verification badge. Availability depends on your trade and area.
Google regularly offers new advertisers credit when they start spending. It can be a cheap way to test ads, but read the terms and set a budget limit before you start.
How SEO works
SEO means making your website and Google Business Profile the best answer for the searches your customers make. For a local business that includes your Business Profile, reviews, website content, consistent business details across the web, and technical health. You're not paying Google for placement, you're earning it, which is why it takes longer and why it lasts.

When Google Ads makes sense
- You've just launched and need work this month
- Your work is seasonal and you need a boost at peak times
- You're promoting a specific offer or new service
- You want to test which searches bring in customers before investing in SEO
- Your trade is very competitive and SEO will take time to catch up
When SEO makes sense
- You want a steady flow of enquiries over the long term
- You'd rather not pay for every click forever
- You're a local business that customers find through Google Maps
- You want to build trust through reviews and a strong online presence
Using both together
The two work well side by side. Ads bring in leads while SEO builds, and the data from your ads shows which searches actually turn into customers, which tells you where to focus your SEO. When you rank organically and appear in the ads for the same search, you take up more of the page and push competitors further down.
Over time, many local businesses find they can reduce their ad spend as their organic and Maps rankings improve, keeping ads only for their most valuable services or busy periods.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself two questions. Do I need customers this month? If yes, ads can help. Do I want customers finding me in a year without paying for each click? If yes, start SEO now, because the sooner it starts, the sooner it pays off. For most small businesses, the honest answer is yes to both, with SEO as the priority.
